SOLVE cleanup on April 17 a HUGE success

It was a perfectly beautiful weekend in the
City of Garibaldi
!  Yes the weather was beautiful, but so was the community support for the "Garibaldi Cleanup Around the Bay" event.  This event was part of
Solve
's first ever Oregon Spring Cleanup, presented by
Portland General Electric
.
We had 40 volunteers participate in our event that included locals, as well as, those who just came to
Visit Garibaldi
to be a part of our event.
Volunteers were assigned to different areas along the water’s edge and in surrounding parking lots around the
Port of Garibaldi
.
Despite the efforts of many locals who actively engage in weekly cleanups, our volunteers were still able to collect 27 bags of trash, ropes, tires, tarps, various metal and plastic debris, and more in unexpected place. The most common item found were discarded zip-ties cut from crab pots in locations surrounding the 3 crabbing docks.
We owe a BIG thanks to the
Port of Garibaldi
staff member, Curtis, for setting up our check-in table and hauling away all the trash collected to the dumpster that the Port kindly donated us the use of for this event.
We also would like to thank
Solve
for the cleanup supplies and for facilitating the registration for the event!
We were not the only ones participating in this statewide Oregon Spring Cleanup type event, in total, 2,471 volunteers collected 22,256 pounds of trash and marine debris across the state on Saturday!
Solve
says they are not done yet, they will be celebrating the Oregon Spring Cleanup through next week (including actual Earth Day on Thursday!) and next weekend, so if you haven’t gotten involved yet now is your chance! Visit www.solveoregon.org to learn more, sign up, and join the efforts.
We would also like highlight local business owner Cheryl Gierga Hamilton of
PacificGypsy
who facilitates the Garibaldi Beautiful Project year round.  You can pick up a bucket from her shop and fill it with trash found in town and bring it back to receive a $5.00 in-store credit at her shop!  To learn more check out her FB page or stop by her shop! Thank you for your continued efforts to keep our town beautiful!

thank you (1)
